[002371] Dale, T.F.. Riding and Polo Ponies. London: Lawrence & Bullen Ltd, 1902. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good / No Jacket. The author was a great polo enthusiast and one of his arguments in this book is that there is no reason for any country farmer not to derive an extra income from breeding polo ponies. The author describes in detail how polo ponies evolved, our native breeds of ponies and how they are bred, then the influence of native and foreign breeds on the riding pony. He gives space to the Polo Pony Society, of which he was a council member, and its stud books, and describes polo pony shows and competitions. Judging from the number of pictures, he was an enthusiast for the American polo pony and he also devotes a long section to the polo pony in India. Finally he deals with riding ponies and remounts and with pony character. The historian will find the list of leading riding pony studs quite fascinating. There are 33 black and white photographic plates. Noted that the plate facing page 139 has become detached. Also the tissue paper protecting the plate opposite the title page is largely missing. He then champions the excellence of the Arabian horse according to his several authorities, including the great Emir Abd-El-Kader. He explains how the Arab has been admired particularly by great soldiers of history and describes the horses of ancient Arabia so far as history has told us about them. Chapter 9 is interestingly entitled "Mr Day and the Dodo".
